Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Places to Live as a Digital Nomad

Tired of crowded nomad hubs like Bali or Lisbon? This post reveals underrated cities around the world that offer great infrastructure, affordable living, and a refreshing lifestyle for digital nomads — plus some personal insights from life off the usual map.Popular destinations are popular for a reason — but that doesn’t mean they’re the best fit for everyone. In fact, some of the most fulfilling nomad experiences come from lesser-known cities where you can live well, spend less, and truly immerse yourself in a new culture.

Here are a few of my favorite under-the-radar places for digital nomads, along with what makes each one special.

🇲🇰 1. Skopje, North Macedonia

Why it’s great:

Nomad tip: Try working from Public Room or Hub Skopje, and don’t miss a weekend trip to Lake Ohrid — it feels like a Mediterranean escape at half the price.

🇲🇽 2. Puebla, Mexico

Why it’s great:

Nomad tip: It’s quieter than Mexico City but close enough for weekend visits. The city has great cafés and a walkable historic center that’s perfect for work/life balance.

🇬🇪 3. Kutaisi, Georgia

Why it’s great:

Nomad tip: Georgia is one of the easiest countries for remote workers to settle in. Kutaisi is also less touristy, making it easier to connect with locals.

🇲🇾 4. George Town, Penang (Malaysia)

Why it’s great:

Nomad tip: The café scene is excellent, and coworking spaces like @CAT are reliable. Plus, Malaysia’s long-stay visa options are flexible for many nationalities.

🇪🇸 5. Valencia, Spain

Why it’s great:

Nomad tip: The city is very bike-friendly, and living in neighborhoods like Ruzafa or El Carmen gives you the best of local and international vibes.

🧭 Why Try Lesser-Known Nomad Cities?

Your dream work-from-anywhere lifestyle might not be in the most famous places — sometimes, the real magic is where no one’s looking (yet).
